The cover of The law firm playbook

Clients now check referrals, and find new firms, by asking ChatGPT and other AI assistants. This playbook shows managing partners what those assistants look for and what to fix first.

What is inside

  • The questions clients ask AI assistants before instructing a firm
  • Five kinds of evidence assistants use to choose firms
  • Which regulator and directory records to fix first
  • A ten-question scorecard to test your own firm
  • What to publish on fixed fees and subscriptions
  • A plan for this month and the next ninety days

Questions your buyers ask

  • Asked an AI assistantWhich law firms in Birmingham are best for employment law for employers?
  • Asked an AI assistantDo I need a solicitor to sell my company, and how much will it cost?
  • Asked an AI assistantBest commercial property solicitors in Leeds for a lease renewal on our warehouse
  • Asked an AI assistantAn employee raised a grievance after being put on a performance plan. What should I do?

Three of the ten scorecard questions

  1. Do you lead with two or three practices, rather than giving twenty practices equal weight?
  2. Does each lead practice have separate pages for the specific problems clients bring, such as grievances or settlement agreements?
  3. Does each of those pages open with the client's question and answer it in the first paragraph?

The full scorecard, a plan for this month and the next ninety days, and the sources assistants check are in the PDF.

Questions founders ask

Will publishing detailed legal guides reduce our billable work?

In our experience, no. Clients who read a clear explanation usually see how much can go wrong and want someone to handle it. The firm that explained the problem is the one they are most likely to call. A short note that the page is general information, not advice on an individual matter, is enough for most firms.

How much do Legal 500 and Chambers rankings matter for this?

A great deal. They are independent, researched and organised by practice and region, which is the same shape as the questions clients ask. If you are not ranked, a well-prepared submission with strong client referees is worth the effort alongside the website work. Chambers says it conducts over 366,000 research interviews and surveys with in-house counsel a year.

How much does a solicitor charge to handle the sale of a limited company?

It depends on the size and structure of the deal and how much due diligence the buyer wants, so we do not quote market figures. Company sales are not on the SRA's transparency list, but the Code requires the best possible information about pricing. Publish what drives the cost and a typical range for your usual deal size, and the assistant has a real answer to give.

Is a fixed-fee commercial lawyer better than an hourly-rate firm for a small business?

For defined work, a fixed fee gives a small business certainty. For disputes or deals whose scope changes, hourly billing with a clear estimate may be fairer to both sides. What matters is that the scope and the triggers for extra charges are written down before work starts. A firm that explains this plainly on its own site is the one quoted.
